The Most Terrifying Effect of Global Warming in Pictures

There is little doubt that the effects of global warming on our
planet are already visible – in the last century the average temperature has risen around 1 degree Fahrenheit (0.6 Celsius) – but the greatest single danger, scientists warn, is that global warming will cause a dramatic rise in sea levels, flooding the world’s most powerful cities under a catastrophic deluge. Environmental Graffiti has decided to take a look at the apocalypse humanity might be facing…

1

These terrifying pictures illustrate the global deluge that threatens to engulf large sections of the world as a result of unchecked climate
change. Huge swathes of development could be submerged, including much of the US eastern seaboard and southern UK. The effect of such a deluge will be to drown some of the world’s most recognisable landmarks: the Statue of Liberty in New York, Tower Bridge in London, Tokyo’s vivid neon lights – all could potentially be swept away by a flood caused by pollution of the Earth’s atmosphere.

2

And surely it is the thought of this, a flood of biblical proportions, which is the most terrifying of all the deadly effects of global warming.
Droughts, heatwaves, hurricanes and famine are all worrying, but
such a titanic inundation would eliminate the centres through which
these other disasters could be coped with, leaving us isolated and in
serious trouble. As they say: water may sustain life, but in this case it may also be the end of life as we know it.

Climate change has already raised sea levels by between 4 and 8 inches (10 and 20 cm), a significant rise in itself, but nothing compared to the devastating rise of nearly 25 feet (7 m) that would occur if Greenland’s enormous ice sheet melted – as scientists predict it will this century.

3

The amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere has steadily increased over the last century, largely due to large scale consumption of fossil fuels and other pollutants, increasing the amount of heat that is being retained in the atmosphere. Scientists believe this is one of the prime causes of the warming effect the planet has been undergoing.

The issue is set to dominate the opening sessions of the international climate change conference in Copenhagen this week, when scientists will outline their latest findings on a host of issues concerning global warming. The meeting has been organised to set the agenda for this December’s international climate talks (also to be held in Copenhagen), which will draw up a treaty to replace the current Kyoto protocol for limiting carbon dioxide emissions.

4

Scientists also warned that higher levels of greenhouse gasses retained in the atmosphere would lead to an increase in the amount of water held by plants in their soil. Moisture evaporates back into the atmosphere through tiny pores called stomata, but higher levels of carbon dioxide in the air cause these holes to reduce in size, leading to reduced water loss from the plant and leaving more water in the soil. The increased amount of moisture in the soil leaves these areas extremely susceptible to flooding, as only a small increase in precipitation is needed to push the soil past saturation.

5

A temperature increase of only 3 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit would be
enough to substantially melt the ice sheet, causing a rise of well over the 3 feet necessary to submerge the eastern seaboard (including New York), and approaching the 6 foot level that would see a large part of Florida flooded. Of course, low lying countries such as Bangladesh or the Maldives would experience the same effect on a much faster scale, along with much of the globe, as these terrifying images show.

6

Many of the largest global cities in the world could fall prey to a flood of epic proportions induced by this gradual warming process – from Los Angeles to London, and New York to Nassau. There are, however, those who are doubtful, both of the likelihood of a flood at all and of the cause of one if it did occur. On the latter point, many claim that an increase in underlying volcanic activity, coupled with the Earth’s natural cycle of heating and cooling, is the more likely explanation for any increase in global temperature. Yet this argument appears to disintegrate when we consider that the sheer rate of current temperature increase is unprecedented, suggesting unnatural causes. Climate change, it seems, is a fact, and is, unfortunately, here to stay.

7

And whilst these amazing fantasy pictures paint a pseudo-romantic
(and almost touching) portrait of the Earth’s ruins reclaimed by water – one of nature’s great elemental forces – the reality would, of course, be nothing as comfortable to our dispositions. Centuries of culture would be consumed; great monuments to past causes, complex transport systems and age-old centres of commerce all destroyed, not to mention hundreds of thousands of miles of residential housing. Frightening pictures are one thing, but the terrifying reality of the effects that might be induced by atmospheric pollution is quite another.

8

And because here at Environmental Graffiti we’re sure that, like us, you don’t want to see the planet go under, we urge you to consider these pictures next time the issue of global climate change or atmospheric warming comes up. The reality of melting ice caps may come sooner than you think, and its effect may be deadlier than you can imagine. Let’s hope, for all our sakes, the scientists are proved wrong – but with a heavy heart, we must admit that somehow, we don’t think they will be.

You should be watching the show called LIFE AFTER PEOPLE which speculates all of these possible scenarios, very fascinating stuff.

these pics are pathetic. woooow. yess i think global warming is somewhat effecting the world. but not that much. like in the last centrey the temepure only raised one. whoopy doo. i wish scientists would just shut up about shit like this. jeez

  3. Kyle Davis

yall got that from the Day After Tomorrow movie !

  4. Asad Saeed

Those pictures are more likely snapped from 2012 movie… global warming is just a hoax for scientists to milk money.. every year they come out with something new…mad cow disease… bird flue…swine flue..etc. etc. When are we gonna see some hard facts? some raw pictures taken yesterday or today!

Asad, first of all you couldn’t be more wrong. The fact that you think that makes me think how uneducated you are.

  5. Robert

It’s funny that none of these “global warming” people ever mention the fact that in th last ten years, the global temp has dropped.

The effects may not such adverse.

And another thing which scientists have forgot is “The Adaptation”.
We will survive and nothing is going to happen like it was shown in the movie 2012. U know I was laughing at people who made it…..because the concept shown in the movie was taken from the story of one of the PROPHET. His name was NOOH. It is in Quraan. There is one famous movie on that issue. The whole world was drowned and prophet NOOH is commanded to make a big ship…..that is regarded as the first ship in the history of mankind…..and then the believers join him in the ship and others die for their disbelief in God and they are sentenced to severe calamity by God.

I think that the stuff in this article is exaggerated.

Indeed the damage done over the years is severe and we are already experiencing this here in Greece, its already December and you can go out with a light jacket and light clothing in general while during previous winters I had to wear tights under my jeans in order to keep warm and my feet were freezing in my sneakers. There was hardly any rain during autumn which is also totaly unusual for Greek weather. Also my friends in Scandinavian countries admit that it isn’t snowing enough like it used to. The effects of global warming are evident.
Exagerating or not, it’s there for us to experience.

I DONT BELIEVE THAT GLOBAL WARMING IS OUR FAULT. ITS THE NATURAL CIRCULATION OF THE EARTH.

    1. Clay

This is true to a certain extent but the increase in CO2 from more cars being in circulation, and in general the burning of fossil fuels has greatly increased the rate at which global warming can really do damage and has been doing damage.

  10. Valmira

wooww those pictures looks like movie nd not to much really but the “GLOBAL WARMING” i thing is really danger and that coms from big companys of gaz and naft and we have to do something to stop that and nobody more then as “people” and speciali big companys can’t do more so people help with this and be careful and save the world where your living !!!

hey thnx for such important info..
culd u plz tell me dat the facts about the earth’s crust, wich has been shown in the movie 2012 are really true?

Controversy has exploded onto the Internet after a major global-warming advocacy center in the UK had its e-mail system hacked and the data published on line. The director of the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit confirmed that the e-mails are genuine — and Australian publication Investigate and the Australian Herald-Sun report that those e-mails expose a conspiracy to hide detrimental information from the public that argues against global warming (via Watt’s Up With That): did you mean these same scientists?

  13. Robert N. Smith

Global Warming, huh? Well, why don’t y’all come to Montana where in Sept and October we had record low temps and snow. Right now, it’s 3 degrees where I’m at and there is about 3″ of snow on the ground.

I think that global warming is greatly exaggerated!! While I do believe we, as humans, should take better care of our planet, I don’t believe that we are the root cause of whatever is happening with the climate. We may be a contributing fator, but we are to in-substantiate (maybe not the right word?!) to cause what scientists are saying we are causing. God is in control and His plan will be carried out no matter what we insignificant human beings do on this planet!! Praise God!!

Global warming is real. In Portland Maine, it is right now 51 degrees at 1:10 in the morning. Maine is known for its snow. But we haven’t gotten any. An besides that ice caps are melting. Its not Al Gore and a few people agreeing with this. Videos have been taken by people doing there job of Ice Caps the size of Rhode Island breaking loose.

What I can’t understand is why people can’t agree that the Earth is warming up. Its been getting warmer for a long time. Now you can blame what ever you want for the reason. But regardless the Earth is getting toasty. Perhaps it has something to do with the Sun or perhaps it has something to do with wars. Maybe it has nothing to do with it except that the Earth is very old. In 5 billion years somethings going to happen.

And with men only being really intelligent say 70 to 40 thousand years ago it ain’t completely are fault. Yeah from 1820, till now smoke besides camp fires have been going into the atmosphere. But you can’t blame a Hummer and a few a bombs on the current situation. Which yes there is a situation.

But yeah men is a smart bastard race. Moon landing flying something heavy than air in the sky without to many crashes. Fixing the ozone layer creating or imitating a star exploding in the form of a bomb. People can and have done amazing things and no offense but global warming isn’t rocket science. Recycle reduce and reuse come on its easy shit.

Use a light bulb that lasts ten times longer and uses 10% less electricity save yourself money. Buy a 25,000 dollar car that runs on less gas and oil and save yourself more money. Turn the lights off in your house when your not using it

Man-made global warming is complete and utter BS. The geological history of the planet shows vast termperature changes occur continuously back and forth from much hotter than it is now to freezing cold ice ages and mankind wasn’t there to cause any of them.

The vast majority of people of just complete imbeciles that because the temperatures during the last few centuries has been relatively stable that it’s the normal and constant temperature. Dream on morons. The frozen wastelands of Greenland were lush and green when the Vikings found it.

As the hacked emails from one of the fraudulent groups promoting the lie of global warming have exposed their conspiracy. These groups are the same communist thugs that Stalin and the Soviets created after WW2 claiming a man-made Ice Age was coming because of Western industrial progress. After being laughed at for several decades because the temperature was rising, these frauds got back together and switched to Global Warming. Now that the temperature has started declining, they’ve switched once again and now it’s “Global Climate Change”.

Wake up and smell the BS before they force you at gun point back to horse and buggy.

Mother Nature is going to do what she does best….take care of earths business regardless of what Hollywood or scientists say or do. The earth is constantly changing regardless of what humanity does or doesnt do. We could all be dust tomorrow if Mother Nature decides humanity is to heavy to bear. Change is everywhere….most of which humanity has no control over. Relax and hope Mother Nature wipes us out quick and painlessly.

well just like we human beings living in this planet have an expiry date, i believe so does our planet have one way b4r t was built nothing s immortal, but..!As long as we continue to chase our so called better life & our thirst to consume all kinds of natural resources for a price tag our planet cannot be restructured for a future life. Every thing we do now involves burning of fossil fuels, its easier! decisions are made with a push of a button split of a sec tats all it takes we are so living a “buttonized” life & i guarantee our future s gona get more “buttonized” . Its just inevitable. WE GOT TO ACT, & WE GOT TO ACT NOW.

  18. nana

Global Warming is real pple, listen to d scientists, but God promised not to end the world in floods again, so its not the end of the world. We shall naturally overcome.

  19. Chris

Global warming and rising seas might, indeed, be a reality, but I think the end result is being overblown. The wildest predictions are of a half-metre rise in sea levels in the next 100 years. Half a metre! Enough to cause the rebuilding of the wharves and docks in the world and some inconvenience on the beaches. Hardly the end of the world. Those in low-lying island nations or coastal areas might, you know, have to MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND (a revolutionary concept which has been lost in the heat of debate)–you know, actually relocate and avoid any further problem. There will be huge amounts of money from the nations of the world invested in doing this.
As for those who are talking about the Antarctic ice sheet melting: what a load of utter nonsense. The average temperature in Antarctica is well into the minus degrees Celsius. In the interior, where the thick ice sheets are and which gets no warming effect from the sea, the temperature would have to rise by over 50 degrees celsius for any melting to occur. This might not happen for tens of thousands of years. As long as the temperature stays freezing, the ice will remain frozen.

I think this is among the most important information for me. And im glad reading your article. But wanna remark on few general things, The website style is great, the articles is really great : D. Good job, cheers
